From the morning market
The best zucchini fritatta!
Today is Thursday, the day of the morning market. As it was already late when I arrived, it seemed that most of the vegetables at the booth of my favorite vendor were already sold out. “Hmmmm, I should have come earlier…”, but luckily, there was still a half basket of zucchini flowers that had just bloomed in the morning, and a bucket full of freshly laid eggs, both still waiting to land in someone’s kitchen. Immediately, “zucchini frittata” came to my mind, an easy (but always comforting) solution for my busy day lunch!
The smiling vendor put several hand fulls of zucchini flowers in a bag and asked, "How many eggs for the lady”? and carefully wrapped the eggs in a piece of newspaper.
After wrapping the eggs and bagging the zucchini flowers, the vendor said, "There is a bunch of flowers left today, it is for the pretty signora," and also wrapped a bundle of colorful celosia flowers in the newspaper. Well, what a lucky day for such a late start! I hurried home with a bag of fluffy zucchini flowers, eggs, and a bouquet of flowers, ready to make a lunch that I know it is going to be terrific. Happiness always comes in small surprises like this!
A lunch on the terrace consists of a simple frittata made with the freshest ingredients and a salad of arugula I also bought from the vendor. Before
and arugula that we bought together. First of all, we thanked the farmer. A bouquet of cassia on the coffee table.
My Italian is still at a very low level, but even so, I look forward to going to the morning market every week and conversing with the farmers about the weather, their produce, and even their recommended recipes. It is not as convenient as shopping at a supermarket, but it is a wonderful way to connect with people through food, something that is disappearing from our modern lives, and this is the wish of Slow Food. By living a life free from barcodes, I feel as if I am gradually regaining my humanity.
