CITTA SLOW

An ancient hill-top town where the Slow Life begins

Orvieto, Umbria, Italy

Founded by Etruscans on the top of a majestic volcanic rock 325meters above sea level and surrounded by beautiful vineyards, olive groves and cypress trees below, Orvieto is considered as one of the most beautiful hilltop towns in Italy. Its origin dates back to the Etruscan civilization, representing almost 3,000 years of rich culture and history. The town is a perfect showcase of a medieval town, with ancient stone houses, cobbled pavements, maze-like narrow streets and charming piazzas, where it is almost traffic free.

With a population of just 20,000, Orvieto is a perfect “living city” where one can wander around to get lost in rich history and immerse in art, enjoy fine local cuisine, shop at artisanal stores, or just relax in the surrounding nature and watch the time goes by.

In fact, Orvieto is the headquarters of “Cittaslow”, or “Slow City”, the organization that promotes “slow living” by respecting and maintaining the local culture and the way of life, while cultivating a sense of integrated community and human connection.

It was by chance that I discovered that Orvieto was the center of the “Cittaslow” movement. What a blessing! I certainly feel fortunate to have found a home in a place that shares my goal of “slowing down” on the life’s path!
