Slow is the Way to Go!
What is Slow Food?
Slow Food is a global organization founded in 1989 in Torino to prevent the disappearance of local food cultures and traditions. Orvieto was one of the first Italian cities to implement the principle of “Slow Food,” and since the late 1990s, has made a collective effort to introduce traditional local dishes, promote local farming and organic produce, and create an environment that will avail GOOD, CLEAN and FAIR food to all.
Just step into Orvieto's restaurants with the logo of the snail on the front door. You will be greeted with carefully prepared local cuisine that follows this principle.

Let’s Go Local!
The morning market holds an essential place in the heart of Orvieto residents. Twice a week, Piazza Popolo turns into a gigantic food market filled with vendors that sell fresh produce and various goods on booths, trucks, or on a piece of old beaten-up wooden door supported by crates. A must-visit, especially for those interested in where “Slow Food” comes from.
I am sure that you will enjoy practicing Italian phrases with the friendly vendors, and will head back with a bag full of fresh fruits, local cheese or prosciutto wrapped in wax paper, or local honey and jam, along with a few words in Italian as a souvenir!
